Vodacom and the Please Call Me Settlement

For nearly two decades, one South African story has refused to fade away. It is the story of Nkosana Kenneth Makate and the company Vodacom. At the center of the dispute was a simple idea that changed the way millions of people communicate: the Please Call Me message. After more than 17 years, countless court appearances and intense public debate, Vodacom and Makate have finally reached a settlement.

The Please Call Me message was introduced in the early 2000s. It allowed people who did not have airtime to send a free message asking someone to call them back. At the time, airtime was expensive and smartphones were rare. The Please Call Me service became a lifeline, especially for lower income South Africans. It spread quickly and soon became part of everyday communication. Across the country, everyone knew what the message meant. It was simple, useful and free.

Makate argued that he came up with the idea when he worked at Vodacom, and that he was promised compensation. According to him, the company benefited massively from the idea. Vodacom, on the other hand, did not initially agree with Makate’s claims and the matter escalated into a long legal battle. It reached the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and eventually the Constitutional Court. Many South Africans followed the case closely because they felt the story reflected something bigger, something emotional. It was not just about money. It became a story about fairness and recognition.

As the court battles continued, Makate became a symbol for every South African with an idea who feared being ignored by big companies. Many people supported Makate because they believed large corporations often profit from ideas created by ordinary employees. The legal battle took a long time, involved years of stress and financial pressure, and tested Makate’s patience and determination. Yet, he did not give up.

Finally, in November 2025, Vodacom announced that it had reached a settlement agreement with Makate. Although the full financial amount was not revealed publicly, media reports suggest that the settlement could be a very large sum. Some estimates state that it could reach hundreds of millions of rands. Vodacom also confirmed that the agreement will appear in the company’s financial results for the next reporting period. This means investors and the public will soon find out the financial impact.

The settlement represents more than money. It represents recognition. Makate’s fight showed that even if an idea is small or simple, it can still have value. It showed that ordinary people can challenge large corporations and win. It also reminded companies to treat employees fairly. If an employee presents an idea, that idea should be documented, agreed on and handled professionally. Ignoring ideas or verbal agreements can lead to reputational damage and costly legal challenges.

The Please Call Me story also matters for innovation in South Africa. Many young people have ideas but fear that companies will take their concepts without compensation. The outcome gives hope that the law protects people when agreements are broken. However, it also highlights that legal battles can take years, and not everyone has the resources to fight that long.

Interestingly, Makate has stated that he plans to continue working in public service even after receiving the settlement. This shows that his personal mission was not only about wealth. He said he wants young people to believe in themselves and to fight for their rights. His journey shows the importance of self belief, persistence and integrity.

For Vodacom, the settlement closes a difficult chapter. The company faced criticism and reputational risks throughout the legal fight. With the matter now settled, Vodacom can move forward, and investors can focus on the company’s strategies for digital growth and network expansion.

The Please Call Me settlement will be remembered as one of South Africa’s most iconic corporate disputes. It is a reminder that innovation can begin in unexpected places and that even one idea can change an entire industry.
