In a massive milestone for homegrown innovation, buy-local advocacy campaign Proudly South African has thrown its full weight behind Soweto-based technology firm Khoi Tech as it charts an ambitious retail expansion into the highly competitive wearable tech market. The partnership highlights the immense commercial potential of locally designed electronics in a sector traditionally dominated by global Silicon Valley and Asian tech giants.
Founded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Khoi Tech has disrupted the local landscape with its signature health-monitoring smartwatches, including the Afriwatch1, and its newly launched Afripods1 True Wireless Earphones. The company’s unique value proposition lies in its focus on enterprise and public healthcare solutions. For instance, Khoi Tech recently collaborated with the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital to use its high-accuracy smartwatches for the remote monitoring of lung cancer patients, alleviating the hospital’s severe bed shortages.
While the physical assembly of the hardware is managed via international manufacturing contracts, 100% of the intellectual property, specialized software code, and design aesthetics belong to the South African startup. This achievement caught the attention of corporate backers and government agencies alike.
A critical driver of Khoi Tech’s retail footprint is its ongoing partnership with Telkom’s FutureMakers enterprise development programme. Backed by bulk procurement contracts and funding from Telkom, Khoi Tech products are now distributed across more than 300 retail stores nationwide, alongside listings at major outlets like Makro. This week, the brand opened its first dedicated, experiential walk-in store in Centurion, Gauteng. Proudly South African praised the move, noting that supporting Khoi Tech is a blueprint for how local corporate investment and consumer sentiment can cultivate a sustainable, high-tech manufacturing economy right here at home.
