How to Fix a Declined SASSA Application Quickly

It is incredibly stressful to find out your SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) SRD R350 (or the updated R370) application has been declined, especially when you are counting on those funds to get by.

The good news? A “declined” status isn’t necessarily the end of the road. Most rejections happen due to data mismatches or administrative errors that can be corrected. Here is the streamlined guide to getting your application back on track.

1. Identify the “Reason for Rejection”

Before you can fix the problem, you need to know what SASSA thinks is wrong. Log into the SRD website and check your status. Common reasons include:

  • Alternative Income Source Identified: SASSA believes you are receiving more than the threshold (currently R624) into your bank account.
  • UIF/NSFAS/PERSAL Registered: Their system shows you are receiving other government support.
  • Identity Verification Failed: Your details don’t match Home Affairs records.
  • Referred: Your mobile number or ID has been flagged for internal security checks.

2. The Golden Rule: Lodge an Appeal Immediately

If you believe the rejection was a mistake (e.g., you aren’t actually receiving UIF), you must lodge an appeal.

Important: You must lodge an appeal for every single month that your application was declined. An appeal for January does not cover a rejection in February.

How to Appeal:

  1. Go to the ITSAL (Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals) website: https://itssrd.sassa.gov.za.
  2. Enter your ID number and the phone number used during registration.
  3. Request an OTP (One-Time Pin) and enter it.
  4. Select the month(s) you wish to appeal.
  5. Provide the reason why you disagree with the decision and submit.

3. Update Your Information

Sometimes a decline happens because your banking details are wrong or your contact info is outdated.

  • Banking Details: Ensure the bank account is in your name. SASSA will not pay grants into a friend or relative’s account. To update, visit the SRD website, scroll to “How do I change my banking details,” and follow the prompts.
  • Contact Details: If you no longer have access to the phone number you registered with, you must follow the “Change Mobile Number” process on the portal to regain control of your application.

4. Clear Up “Alternative Income” Flags

This is the most common reason for rejection. If you received a one-time gift or a refund that pushed your balance over the R624 limit, SASSA’s automated system sees this as regular income.

  • The Fix: You cannot “delete” the transaction, but you must appeal. In your appeal, state clearly that the deposit was a non-recurring gift or a mistake. The Tribunal will then manually review your bank records rather than relying on the automated algorithm.

5. Contact SASSA Directly for “Referred” Status

If your status says “Referred,” it means your application was flagged for potential fraud. This usually requires a manual fix that an online appeal might not solve quickly.

  • Call the Toll-Free Call Centre: 0800 60 10 11
  • Email: grantenquiries@sassa.gov.za
  • Visit an Office: As a last resort, visit your local SASSA branch with your ID book and proof of residence to verify your identity in person.

Key Timelines to Remember

ActionDeadline
Appeal WindowYou have 90 days from the date of rejection to lodge an appeal.
Processing TimeAppeals can take between 60 to 90 days to be finalized.
PaymentOnce approved, back-pay is usually processed in the next payment cycle.

Pro Tip: Be patient but persistent. Check your status every Monday to see if the “Appeals” section has been updated. Most successful applicants find that once the first appeal is cleared, subsequent months flow much more smoothly.
