13-Man Springboks Show Character to Beat Italy in Turin

Turin — In a test of resilience and character, a depleted Springbok side overcame early adversity to crush Italy 32–14 at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday. Despite being down to 13 men for long stretches of the match, South Africa produced a performance to remember.

The drama began less than 12 minutes into the game when lock Franco Mostert was red-carded for a dangerous tackle. This left the Boks with just 14 men — and later in the match, they were reduced to 13 following a yellow card to Marco van Staden.

But instead of folding, the Springboks regrouped under intense pressure. Their defence held firm through Italian attacks, while substitutions and tactical reshuffles helped steady the ship.

Leading 10–3 at half-time, South Africa put the foot down in the second half. They scored three more tries through Morne van den Berg, Grant Williams, and first-time Test scorer Ethan Hooker, closing out the game with clinical precision.

Van Staden’s early try just before the break gave the Boks momentum, while flyhalf Handré Pollard and Manie Libbok provided reliable points through the boot.

Fullback Damian Willemse was named Player of the Match. His presence was a constant threat under the high ball and in counter-attack phases.

Despite being a heavily rotated squad — Erasmus made 11 changes from the team that beat France — the Boks showed incredible squad depth. Their ability to absorb pressure, adapt on the fly, and finish strongly underlined their championship mettle.

Coach Rassie Erasmus praised the composure of his side, noting that the win epitomised the Boks’ character: “Bravery, guts … superior power and skill.”

This win reasserts South Africa’s dominance, even under testing circumstances. It also provides a valuable look at their emerging talent, as several less-experienced players delivered on a big stage. With the Autumn Tour still underway, the Boks will take confidence from Turin into their next fixtures.
