Veteran South African journalist Debora Patta has been dismissed from CBS News, marking the end of her 12-year tenure as a foreign correspondent for the American network. The move forms part of a major restructuring that has seen roughly 100 staffers laid off worldwide.
Based in Johannesburg, Patta built a reputation as one of CBS’s most trusted voices from the field, reporting fearlessly from global conflict zones including Syria, Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas war. Her departure coincides with the closure of CBS’s Johannesburg bureau, which had served as a vital hub for international coverage across the African continent.
Insiders suggest Patta’s removal was a last-minute decision made by CBS’s new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, who reportedly replaced a male correspondent on the layoff list with Patta just hours before final approval.
The decision comes months after Patta’s August 7 interview with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, which drew controversy after Huckabee accused CBS of editing the discussion to distort his remarks on Gaza. Patta had recently signed a new three-year contract and is said to be considering legal action against the network.
