Mngomezulu puts on a show as the Boks go top

The Springboks produced a commanding performance at Kings Park on Saturday, thrashing Argentina 67–30 to move to the top of The Rugby Championship standings.

South Africa ran in nine tries to the Pumas’ three in a match that combined attacking flair with set-piece dominance, giving the hosts back-to-back victories in the competition.

Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was the star of the show, delivering a record-breaking individual haul of 37 points. He scored a hat-trick of tries, landed 10 out of 11 kicks, and played a pivotal role in controlling territory with his boot. His cross-kick to Cheslin Kolbe set up one of the standout tries of the evening.

The game also saw one of the strangest moments in recent Test rugby when Kolbe mistakenly drop-kicked the ball in his own in-goal area, allowing Argentina’s Santiago Chocobares to score. Kolbe, however, quickly redeemed himself by scoring a try after the break as the Boks took firm control.

Despite the emphatic win, South Africa’s first-half discipline was poor. Penalties for off-sides, a dangerous tackle, and a yellow card for Malcolm Marx gifted Argentina points. Coach Jacques Nienaber will be concerned about repeating such lapses in tighter contests.

In the set-pieces, the Springboks were dominant. The scrum was solid whenever called upon, while the lineout proved a decisive weapon. South Africa not only secured their own ball but also disrupted Argentina’s, turning stolen possession into attacking opportunities.

The result comes just a week after the Springboks’ record 43–10 win over New Zealand, making them the first side in this year’s tournament to register consecutive victories. The win leaves South Africa well-placed as the competition heads into its decisive rounds, with their next fixture set for London.
